Google Core – The time our life had been paused due to the COVID-19, Google came up with a brand new improved, reformed, and revised algorithm. Google upgraded its second Core Update of 2020 amidst the Coronavirus lockdown. The update started rolling out on May 4, 2020 which was announced by Danny Sullivan. The first update was launched in January 2020. ‘May 2020 Core Update’ is an extension and advancement of the January 2020 update.
What Happened during Google updates?
Google casts approximately 3,200 algorithms updated per year, huge isn’t it? The company regularly releases one or more changes designed to improve its search results. Most of the updates and changes are non-noticeable but helps them grow and progress gradually.
As we discussed earlier, Google’s Core Update was released on May 4, 2020. The upgrade continued rolling out for up to 2 weeks and was completed on May 18, 2020. The update was done with the motive to make Google more robust and user-oriented.
People are calling this upgrade the ‘Pandemic Upgrade’ due to the timing of the upgrade which is amidst the coronavirus pandemic and ‘Force Update’ because the upgrade was announced on May 4, 2020, International Star Wars Day ( #maythefourthbewithyou).
What’s the Impact of this update?
It is being said that the update was very big. This algorithm amendment has impacted many websites since ratings of many websites have changed. Many sites that once had higher ratings have gone low and many with low ratings now have increased ratings. Go check yours fast if you haven’t already, scan your ratings after the update.
The Search Engine Page Results (SERP) has been more volatile than usual since the update started rolling out, which means that rankings of multiple websites have changed. The below-mentioned image contains data from SEMrush Sensor which closely analyzes movement on Google.
Many webmasters and SEOs are already criticizing the timing of this core update. They say that keeping up with online businesses has been difficult for people during this pandemic.
Regulations and restrictions had resulted in reduced online sales and traffic for many traders and businessmen. While many websites have found this upgrade beneficial.
Are you wondering if it has affected your website?
There is no need to panic!
We’ll talk about how to sustain your website’s ranking in the forthcoming segment of this blog.
Which Industries Have Been Affected?
Evidently, the industries that revealed the highest fluctuations on their rankings are
- travel,
- real estate,
- health,
- pets and animals and
- people and society.
All the industries were affected one way or another but industries like sports and news were least affected with minimum rating fluctuations.
What was the basis for ranking?
You must be wondering on what grounds was the grading and ranking of these websites changed in this Core Update.
The rankings of websites have been changed purely on the basis of content. So the ones who update their content every now and then have nothing to worry about. This regular content update has been rewarded by Google by providing the websites with ratings on their fresh content.
How to increase your rank?
Now let’s discuss what steps you could follow to sustain your rank.
- For beginners, you could publish at least 4 articles or blogs per month to have the continuity on your website.
- Updating your dry content is something you must do in order to get better Google ratings.
- Merely adding pictures or modifying a sentence or a paragraph will certainly not help your rankings.
- You need to delete irrelevant information from your content.
Now, what counts as irrelevant information?
Your information and content have a shelf life that will not be considered meaningful after a certain period of time. You need to delete that information to get fresh and new content.
- You might have to add a couple of new paragraphs which will give the readers an insight into what new changes have happened after the article was published.
- You have to check for dead links. You need to examine if the links you inserted in the blogs earlier are still working or not. If not, you have to replace or omit them.
You might have to re-write the entire blog or maybe some portions of it, just like Wikipedia does.
